I love poetry, and I always want to share that love of poetry with students. Last year, I decided to add a new element to my poetry unit, Poetry Speed-dating. This simple activity allows students to explore some poetry in a low-stakes way. The set-up is simple. Find a variety of poetry books and anthologies for students to browse. You can collect anthologies from the library, set up stations with access to various poetry websites you like, or have students bring in books of poetry from home.

The Poetry Exchange explores the idea of poems as friends. Through conversations, events and our podcast, we capture the insights of readers and share them. In return they receive a gift: a bespoke recording of their chosen poem, inspired by the conversation and their thoughts and feelings about the poem. The Poetry Exchange can travel - we deliberately seek out curious, inviting locations in which to run exchanges - from libraries to literature festivals to hotels and railway stations.

Poetry is always a challenge for an actor, especially when it comes to a performance for audio production. The poet shapes the quintessence of an experience or an idea into just enough words to communicate it to the reader or listener. To hear a poem in your head is part of its personalised impact, an intimate intercourse between the inner world of the poet and your own inner world. Somewhere in the air between the two minds the poem finds its life. The actor can become a sort of interloper in this intimacy, running the risk of imposing his own interpretation, his experience, even to the point of hijacking words designed by the poet to express something vital to you, the listener.
